Online video has been growing in popularity over the last few years, and now accounts for 74% of all web traffic. Add live streaming and some interaction to the mix and you’ve got yourself a marketing winner…
Live video is HUGE. No wonder the key social media players, including Facebook and Instagram have prioritized live streaming, and Twitter spent $86M to buy live-streaming app Periscope back in 2015. Now integrated in Twitter, you can create/watch Periscope videos within Twitter, easily Tweet Live from your phone or use the Periscope app for a richer experience. Two services becoming one can be a bit confusing, so think about it this way:
- You create live videos, either on Periscope or on Twitter Live.
- All Twitter Live videos (or broadcasts) are powered by Periscope.
- All Twitter Live videos are viewable and searchable on Periscope and Twitter.
Want to dive into the nitty gritty details? Check out this helpful article by Twitter. For the sake of simplicity whenever I say ‘Twitter Live’ I also mean ‘Periscope’, and vice verse.
Now even though Twitter is, first and foremost, a text-messaging platform, Twitter Live is a powerful way to promote yourself, interact with your existing followers, reach new ones and acquire more leads and customers. Therefore I’d encourage you to make the most of Twitter Live and make the most of it, tweet a few times before going live to warm up your audience, and a few times thereafter to refer users to your blog post, squeeze page, webinar etc. And it gets even cooler: Twitter and Periscope automatically create videos from your Live broadcasts, so you can further use them as content marketing material. Twitter Live videos will autoplay on your followers feed, increasing their chances to get watched and shared.
The good news is that most of the live videos on Persicope/Twitter are rubbish, featuring people who simply talk nonsense, get drunk or high or simply get silly, making it super-easy for you
to stand above the crowd!
So here are a few creative ways to grow your business using Tweet Live. So whether you’re a food blogger, musician, designer, author or an aspiring entrepreneur, there’s something here for you.
Now grab your phone, make yourself comfortable and go LIVE!
Table of contents
1.Travel, sports & adventures
Travel bloggers, adventurers and extreme sports lovers, rejoice! Whether you’re already shooting videos or not, adding Twitter Live to your social media mix seems perfectly natural.
Your phone may have some technical limitations compared to a top-end webcam, but then nothing beats the ability to click on one button and boom – all your followers can watch you live
and interact with you, whether you’re climbing El Capitan, taking a canal tour in Amsterdam or relaxing on a balcony in Paris. In the words of full-time traveler Anita Wang Lee:
“It was so easy. All I had to do was talk into my phone and the content was made!”
Using the GoPro app, iPhone users can now live broadcast their most daring experiences, such as skiing, skateboarding and mountain biking, sharing the excitement with their viewers.
2.Live training & presentations
The interactive nature of Twitter Live screams ‘Live training’. Whether you’re a guitarist, a chef or a yoga instructor, you can easily start a Tweet a Live class, encouraging viewers to ask questions
in the comments and tap to Like the show if they’re enjoying it. Twitter and Periscope are doing their best to promote your live streams to relevant audiences.
Twitter Live is not designed for paid views or video purchases as of yet, but that should not put you off. Think of your live training or presentation videos as a form of content marketing which can drive more users into your squeeze/landing page and promote your upcoming product launches, blog series, events etc. Now that’s powerful!
3.Prodcut demos & unboxing
Product unboxing may are still popular, especially when a new phone, PlayStation or any other hot product in your niche has just come out. Yes, there’s a whole method for creating highly sharable unboxing videos, but timing is crucial here, and that’s where Twitter Live comes into play. Imagine you’ve just bought that gadget all your followers have been dreaming about for months. Now show off your excitement and unbox it right in front of them, talking the process through. If you have a physical product you may also create a quick demo, explaining users the best ways to use the product.
Use your demos and unboxing videos as a hook to promote a training for said product, a blog post, or grow your list offering a free report on how to use the product.
4.Instant customer support, Q&A sessions
If your business can afford it, consider using Twitter Live as a quick, interactive support channel. Your customers will appreciate the ability to get instant (or nearly instant) solutions without having to wait 24 hours or longer for a customer rep to get back to them. The ability to watch a live person, asking them questions and getting instant replies will provide excellent experience for your users, increasing their confidence in your brand and retention rate.
Keep things simple and efficient by setting a special ‘Support’ Twitter account for your business, and announcing a few daily Twitter Live sessions. In-between broadcasts you can collect questions from your feed and reply to various questions in each Live broadcast. Your customers can add questions when you’re live, and tap to Like on their mobile device, if they’ve found your solution helpful.
5.Live catwalks and ‘How to dress’ demos
Fashionistas and fashion bloggers, now you can show off your best outfits live. Walk down the catwalk with the latest collection or open your wardrobe and pull out that hot summer dress or high heels, or take your followers for a wild shopping spree.
Your viewers may have some questions – answer them live and send them to your blog post, YouTube channel or live coaching call for more. Clothes look great in photos but they look best when you’re the one wearing them. Live.
6.Live music, parties and DJ sets
Many users stream play guitar, piano and other instruments live on Twitter Live. Still others play their favorite records, give high-octane DJ sets or broadcast from some of the hottest musical events, such as Glastonbury festival.
If you’re doing any kind of music, Twitter Live can be a game changer for you, an interactive platform allowing your talent to be discovered as you build your crowd of raving fans. What’s the next step – a musical tour, a live concert,
a digital album or another promotion? That’s for you to decide.
7.LIVE cooking shows
Foodies, chefs, lovers of cooking – it’s time to get the pots and pans out and sharpen your knives! Your food-loving fans love reading your blog and watching your videos, but watching you cook a dinner right in front of them
will be the icing on the cake! Don’t worry if you burn something or use the wrong ingredient – this is what makes you real and allows your followers to connect to you.
So keep things simple, and choose a simple dish you’re going to cook. Your viewers may have questions – answer the burning ones (no pun intended..) and keep the rest for a more in-depth video, blog post or ebook. You can offer a
cheat sheet/complete recipe in exchange for your followers’ emails.
8.Promote your product, book, website etc
Twitter Live can be used for promoting any product, service or website. If you’re a writer/author, why not use it to promote your upcoming book? You can whet your readers’ appetite by reading a few pages from your book or talking
about it. Take it a step further by sending readers to a squeeze page where they can get the 1st chapter for free in exchange for their email. If they get hooked, they’ll want to buy your book to read the rest!
9.Home interior tours
Realtors, architects and interior designers – give your viewers a live tour of the house in question or showcase the makeover you’ve just given it. Use the Live 360 feature to give viewers an immersive experience.
You may get comments from users, asking you to show the kitchen or the garden – that’s where Twitter Live shines. The next step is to send them to your site or your ask them to DM their contact details to schedule a viewing.
